Resident is the owner of Afana Furniture Store Ashley dealer at 288 Central Ave. Owner states that today @ 3:26 pm he had his business truck parked in front of his business to unload some furniture when his business truck was hit. The owner then goes over to the Police Station ( North District ) to file a report when he said he was talked down by 4 officers. A police report was made in reference to the hit but he was also ticketed for parking illegal. Owner states that it is not fare that the police station take up all the parking spots in which leaves him to park where he can to unload or load his furniture. Says something has to be done he says or that he can lose his business.

I called the owner and explained that the police did there job. I'm calling in the morning to obtain information on the process in getting a commercial zone to load and unload his furniture.

The stores on Central Ave get to use the T intersections to unload if they are near. This means we can do nothing to make those intersections safer by bumping them out and planting trees to slow down the traffic. That store, which I have reported to the police twice for stacking their mattresses outside for sale (a health code violation) does everything it can to say they are keeping furniture outside in front on the sidewalk "because they are unloading" . They take forever unloading, needless to say. I dont understand the ticket really because parking seldom tickets trucks that are unloading because we couldnt operate a commercial ave otherwise. I have gone in and nicely complained a few times about the mattresses and stuff outside (it looks very tacky) and they are ALWAYS nasty and rude. They dont understand anything unless they are making money.

marymook in reference to the mattresses outside and furniture being displayed on the sidewalk I'm waiting from a response to an email that was sent out . I will update you as soon as I hear whether not it is actually illegal in how the owner displays his furniture outside the store. Also I told the owner he has to apply for a commercial zone to load and unload his furniture but from what I found out in my office it is hard to get.

Requirements for a Commercial Zone: Merchant shall send a letter to the attention of Patricia Logan, Supervising Traffic investigator at the Division of Engineering, Traffic and Transportation , Municipal Services Complex/ 13-15 Linden East, JCNJ 07305 requesting that a loading zone be designated at the business. the Following information should be included in the letter: 1. Type of business and materials being loading and/or unloaded. 2. Size of the delivery trucks 3. Days and Hours during the week the loading zone would be in use. 4. A contact person to meet with at the site and his/her contact information. Once we receive the letter , a Traffic Analyst from this division will contact the designated individual to set up a meeting at the business location to discuss the request and survey the area to determine if s loading zone is warranted. If this is Division determines that the request has merit , then a Resolution will be proposed for Municipal Council approval authorizing the Regulation designated a loading zone at the location with the days and hours that are agreed upon. Upon adoption of this Resolution , a letter will be sent to the Merchant requesting payment for each sign and each u-post that is installed. The fee is $75 for each u-post installed and each loading zone sign. Upon remittance of the payment, a work order will be submitted to the Division od Buildings and Streets to install the loading zone signs.

I have seen the furniture truck sometimes park too close to the intersection or on the crosswalk which makes it nearly impossible for other vehicles/pedestrians to make right and cross onto Central from Hutton. Maybe that's why they got the ticket for illegal parking! If the truck wasn't illegally parked, it would've never been involved in an accident? Some people are such get overs...smh The North District police station is the only police station in Jersey City that doesn't have a designated parking lot for its patrol vehicles and officers personal vehicles. Really?
